Irish Placename Finder
An important tool in identifying townlands and placenames in Ireland is the 1851 General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, parishes and Baronies of Ireland. This index was created after the 1851 Census of Ireland.
There was over 60,000 townlands and towns, some of which were known by multiple names. This index is an aid to those trying to identify placenames and to locating them.
Note:
You can use wildcards when searching for placenames:
- % (percent) represents any sequence of letters.
- _ (underscore) represents any individual letter.
See here for examples of searches with wildcards.
Irish Ancestries provide an efficient family research service based in Ireland.
They will help you "find the roots to your family tree".
