Griffiths Primary Valuation was compiled and published between 1848 and 1864. It lists every landholder and every householder in Ireland. If an ancestor owned or leased land, they will have been listed here. To search the Valuation records requires the following information - Surname, Forename and Townland/County. Information on other members of the family can ensure finding the correct records. Subsequent to the Valuation survey, Revision Books were kept that recorded the passage of ownership between people whether through inheritance or being sold.
When the correct landholding record is found, the transcription will have the following details for each subsequent owner or occupier:
- townland address
- householders name
- who the property was leased from (immediate lessor)
- description of the property;
- acreage;
- valuation.
It is also possible to order a townland map that shows where the landholding was located.
Genealogy Tip: If you are unsure of the spelling of a townland, or you want to know where the townland is, use the Irish Placename Search facility.
